some comics
  • scott mccloud…totally inspiring…he's a major reason why i make digital comics
  • electric sheep comix patrick farley
  • e-merl daniel merlin goodbrey
  • john barber comics john barber
  • magic inkwell cat garaza
  • lowbright derek kirk kim
  • bruno strip chris baldwin
  • nowhere girl justine shaw
  • dicebox Jenn Manley Lee
  • narbonic shaennon garrity
  • modern tales and serializer comic portals with wide range of work

  • graphic novels, and bound comics
surprise…most of them are autobiographical, or feel like they are
  • Understanding comics and Reinventing Comics by scott mcCloud…read them.
  • I Never Liked You by chester brown… this is chester's autogiographical coming of age story...it's had a BIG impact on my own storytelling and comic sensibility.
  • Cruddy an illustrated novel by lynda barry (she also does the awesome weekly strip marlys).
  • Tales of a Young Urban Failure an hysterical somewhat autobiographical account of being out of work by eric moe…drawn with stick figures.
  • The Poor Bastard issues 1 thru 6 of joe matt's comic autobiographical comic peepshow…this is someone who is not afraid to show his ugly side to the world.
  • Through The Habittrails by jeff nicholson…semi-autobiographical, surreal graphic novel about being at a job you hate and in a life you can't stand…i think this is self-published so look for it on ebay or in a good comic book store.
  • Epileptic 1 by david b…beautifully drawn…an autobiographical story recently translated from french to english (lucky for me)…it's not just about a family struggling with a son/brother who has epilipsy, it's also about how david used fantasy to escape it all…great use of black and white images.
  • Alec: How to be an Artist by eddie campbell…an autobiographical work starring eddie's alter ego, alec. this is his story of trying to survive as a comic artist.
  • Ghost World by dan clowes…[who writes the comic eightball among other projects] ghost world is the story of enid and rebecca, two teenage friends trying to deal with life…and by some amazing fluke the movie is actually good too.
  • Sleepwalk the first four issues of optic nerve by adrian tomine…stories about angst ridden and disenfranchised people.
  • Gemmy Bovary by posy simmons …i like the layout of words and images it's really different from most graphic novel and the story, told using a mixture of past diary entries and first person narrative, shadows flaubert's classic Emma Bovary, but with a twist of course.
  • Box Office Poison by alex robinson…follows the lives of a bunch of twenty somethings in nyc and brooklyn i think just about every page of this 602 page read was riviting...funny to boot.
  • Batman: The Killing Joke by alan moore…while i don't usually go for mainstream stuff, this dark psycological take on the joker and batman works for me…alan moore also penned (among others) the thought provoking anti-hero hero comic Watchman and the classic horror meets anarchy story V is for Vendetta and yeah, they are all on the violent side.
  • Transmopolitan by warren ellis…sometime in the not so distant future our country could end up like ellis' chaotic vision…if you like snow crash by neal stephenson and cyber/sci-fi material along those lines, you may like this.
